Mystery Field

I used to have a cabin in an area of the Yukon that was surrounded by thousands of acres of mostly undisturbed land. There was an area off a game trail though that was perfectly rectangular where nothing grew. All kinds of strange and unsavoury things have been done to the land by settlers in the Yukon so it’s possible such a thing happened here. Still, it peaked my curiosity whenever I walked by. One winter day, my husband and I decided to create something there. We set about creating a spontaneous snow labyrinth in this large rectangular field in the middle of nowhere. It disappeared the following spring while the empty rectangular field still remains.

On the land where we live now, there is also a mysterious clearing in the woods, basically a cul de sac in the forest with only one way in and out, likely created by the previous owner.

Once again I was inspired to create a labyrinth in this space but this time, I used materials from the surrounding forest - fallen trees sawed into smaller pieces and a layer of wood chips underneath making it visible even in winter time, for now. One day it too will decompose and leave no trace of its existence. The design is based on an ancient Celtic pattern.
